“Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.” (Luke 12:51)

Is abortion really wrong? Is homosexuality really a sin? What’s so bad about living together even though we’re not married? Is divorce really that bad- doesn’t God just want me to be happy? Is sharing a juicy bit of gossip really that harmful? Is it really helpful to insist as the Bible teaches that Jesus is the ONLY way to heaven?

Each of us can be so tempted to give in, to compromise, to not speak the truth in love for the sake of “peace” or saving a relationship or not hurting feelings. After all, doesn’t Jesus just want us all to get along?

What does Jesus say? “Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.” The sad reality is that wherever people cling to their own dreams over what Scripture says, wherever people love sin more than the Savior from sin, wherever people compromise instead of speaking the truth in love – God’s Word burns like a fire and cuts like a sharp two-edged sword.

You see, there’s a big difference between true peace and worldly fake peace. Worldly peace is found in compromising God’s truth, surrendering to sin, and signing a treaty with Satan. True peace is found only in Jesus and cutting ties with our sin, Satan, and the sinful world. Clinging to God’s truth will bring division and separation in our earthly lives, within our own families and friendships, and even in our own hearts.

But it’s worth it! Why so? Because we have a Savior who faced the worst separation. Because of our sin and compromises with Satan we deserved a worse separation than anything you could experience on earth – a separation from God. But guess what! Jesus faced that separation for you! On the cross Jesus was forsaken by God Himself, separated from God for you, in your place! Because Jesus faced your separation, you’ll never be separated from God…ever! And that’s where true peace is found for this life and the next!

Rest in the peace you have with Jesus- your sins are forgiven, your guilt is washed away, heaven is your home! Rest in it no matter what division or separation it may bring in this life. It’s worth it eternally!

Treasuring peace in Jesus more than peace in this life, just like you,
