“And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’ (Mark 9:47-48)

How do you know when someone is being serious? Is it the look on their face? Is it the tone of their voice? Is it something else? Sometimes it can be difficult to decide if someone is being serious or not.
It’s not too difficult to discern that Jesus is being VERY serious in the words of this passage. Just before our text Jesus has just finished saying that it would be better for someone to have a large stone hung around his neck and thrown into the sea than to destroy the faith of a little one. He’s also said it would be better to cut off your hand or your foot or pluck out your eye than to sin and end up in hell.
Clearly, Jesus is very serious about this. Why so? Because hell is absolutely horrible! It’s worms eating and never finishing! It’s fire that never goes out! It’s far worse than you or I can imagine! Jesus is so serious because sin destroys faith in Him as the Savior and those who don’t believe in Him will go to hell.
In fact, Jesus gets a lot more serious about hell later on. He gets so serious that He willingly allows people to nail Him to a cross! He’s so serious about it that He took upon Himself everyone’s eternity of hells and suffered them on the cross! He suffered hell for you! God doesn’t want anyone to go to hell, He proved it by paying for the sins of all on the cross.
So, Jesus tells us to turn away from that which turns us away from Him. He freed you from sin’s shackles and slavery! He opened heaven freely for you! Live in that freedom from sin!
Thankful for Jesus’ seriousness about my salvation, just like you,
