“Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave you of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything – all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43-44).

Do you have some coins in your pocket? Do you have some coins sitting in a dish at home? Do you have a refrigerator? I recently heard this, if you have some coins in your pocket you are more wealthy than 78% of the world. If you have a refrigerator, you have more than 95% of the people in the world. Wow! I think each of us can say we are blessed far more than we often think about!

Sometimes we get the idea that our joy in life is connected to our circumstances. If only we had this, then we’ll be happy. If only this would work out, then we won’t worry.

Notice what this poor widow did. She gave to God not just two small coins, but everything- all she had to live on! How could she do that? Could I do that? Could you?

Why did Jesus commend her so highly? It wasn’t because her offering was so large; it was because of her heart, her trust in God and in His promises to her. And her trust in God wasn’t based on her circumstances, it had to be in His faithful promises.

Think about what God’s given you. He’s given you things far better than stuff. He’s also given you His promises: He’s cast your sins into the depths of the sea, He’s washed you clean with His own blood, He will never leave you or forsake you, He will provide all that you need, He will be with you always, He will watch over your coming and going, He hears your every prayer, He guides the universe to work out all things for your good, He will one day bring you to your real home in heaven.

That’s your God. And He’s the one you can trust in no matter your circumstance and no matter what the future will bring. Like this widow, entrust yourself, your all to Him.

Confident in my faithful God, just like you,

pastor
