“Being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.” (Romans 4:21)

So how would you describe “faith”? Is faith a “blind leap into the dark”? Is faith a sort of “wishy-washy feeling”? Is faith thinking it will just all sorta work out in the end? How would you describe faith?

In this verse God describes what faith is. Here God is telling us about Abraham’s faith. What is faith? Faith is connecting God’s power to God’s promises. It’s trusting that if God said it, He will do it. It’s confidence that if God promised it, it’s going to happen.

The problem is when we doubt or lose sight of God’s power; when we doubt or lose sight of God’s promises. What happens when we do that? We easily become filled with fear, worry, stress, or anxiety.

But what has God promised? God’s promised that in your baptism you were washed clean of all sins, adopted into God’s family and made an heir of eternal life. Does God have the power to do that? Yep! God’s promised that in the Lord’s Supper He gives you Himself for the forgiveness of sins. Does God have the power to do that? Yep! God’s promised to be with you always and work out all things for the good of His people. Does God have the power to do that? Yep! God’s promised to be in control no matter what and use whatever ruler or government for His purposes. Does God have the power to do that? Yep! God’s promised that in Jesus your sins are completely forgiven and that He will take you to heaven when you die. Does He have the power to do that? Yep!

Faith simply says, “Amen” to God’s power to do all that He has promised. Read, review, and refresh yourself with God’s promises in His Word! Relish in His power to do everything He’s promised!

Trusting in my God, just like you,
pastor
