“When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, ‘As you know, the Passover is two days away – and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.’ Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled…and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him, ‘But not during the Feast,’ they said, ‘or there may be a riot among the people.'” (Matthew 26:1-5)
Tuesday of Holy Week. Jesus told His disciples the exact time of His arrest and His death. It just amazes me every time I read these verses in context. What incredible irony this is! Right when Jesus is telling His disciples that He’s going to be arrested and crucified right DURING the Passover celebration, His enemies are plotting to do it AFTER the Passover is over.
And you know the irony, right? WHEN is Jesus crucified? Right DURING the Passover! Right when Jesus determined – not His enemies!
Two thoughts we want to consider in regard to this. First, who is in control here? Who is really causing things to happen? Who is calling the shots? It’s Jesus, NOT His enemies. The same is true today. When you look at the world perhaps it’s easy to think that powerful people with a lot of money and a lot of control are really the ones making things happen in the world. Perhaps it’s easy to think we’re nothing but minor, rather insignificant pawns in the grand scheme of things. But that’s simply not true! The reality is, Jesus is still in control, He is still guiding all things for the eternal good of His people – which includes you! He was in control at the time of His death and He’s still in control today!
Second, if Jesus knew the exact time when His enemies were going to arrest Him, do you think He could have eluded them if He wanted to? Sure! But He didn’t. He didn’t hide, He didn’t run away, He didn’t interfere. Rather, He allowed them to arrest Him in His timing. Why so? So He could willingly die on a cross to win the forgiveness of ALL your sins!
That means you have a Savior who is A.) in complete control and who B.) loves you so incredibly much that He willingly and literally went into death in order to save you! What more could you want?
Thankful to have such an incredible Savior, just like you,
