“Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, ‘On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.'” (Genesis 22:13-14)

That should have been me. Elise O’Kane was a flight attendant for United Airlines and apparently tried to switch her schedule to be on Flight 175 from Boston to L.A. on 9/11/01. Her computer froze and she apparently missed the deadline for flight changes by 1 minute. You know what happened to that flight.

What would that be like to think, “That should have been me.” For Elise it made her switch careers and become a nurse to help hurting people. Have you ever said, “That should have been me”?

We all could say that. I should be the one suffering agony and death. I should be the one crying, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me.” I should be the one suffering the torment of hell. That’s exactly what my sins have earned me. That should be me.

But it’s not. Why not? Because just like God provided the substitute for Isaac, God’s provided the ultimate perfect sacrifice for you. Just outside the city walls on that very same mountain God provided the perfect substitute for you! Jesus, the Lamb of God, took your sins every one of them on Himself and died for them in your place. That should have been you, that should have been me. But it’s not. Why not? Because God loves you that much! Because God wants you to enjoy eternity forever with Him that much!

So, how does that change your life to know: that should have been me… but it’s not?

Thrilled to have Jesus as my perfect substitute, just like you,
